WALLINGFORD, CT — Wallingford’s Jane Callanan has been named the Connecticut Insurance Department’s new General Counsel, Commissioner Andrew N. Mais recently announced.
Callanan has an extensive background in insurance law, including experience as an insurance regulator, according to Mais.
“Jane is a superb addition to our leadership team, with a distinguished record and a strong focus on consumer protection,” Mais said in a news release.
Before taking on her new role, Callanan was in private practice with Willkie Farr & Gallagher LLP as Special Insurance Counsel. She represented InsurTech companies and other insurance licensees providing guidance on insurance sales and business practices, innovative insurance products, and transactional matters, according to the news release.
“Prior to that, she held leadership roles with The Hartford initially as a member of The Hartford’s Law Department where she served as a business attorney for various segments and teams within The Hartford’s property and casualty operations,” the news release states. “Nine years later, Jane moved to a business role within The Hartford and led the team responsible for overseeing $3 billion of Hartford insured claims handled by third party administrators.
“Ms. Callanan’s experience as a regulator began in 1995. She started her career in the insurance industry when she first joined the Connecticut Insurance Department as a Staff Attorney providing legal counsel to the Financial Regulation and Consumer Affairs Divisions.”
