Hospital applauded for good financial management – South Coast Herald

Port Shepstone Regional Hospital was recently applauded for practising and promoting sound financial management principles.
The hospital’s public relations officer, Phumza Morai said this after the national Department of Health and the KwaZulu-Natal Treasury department visited the hospital.

Morai said despite the impression that healthcare facilities are all about saving lives, effective financial management is also mandatory to ensure that public money is used in the most economical, effective and efficient manner in compliance with applicable rules and regulations.

She said the purpose of the visit was to review the hospital’s budget against its expenditure, to support and check if the expenditure procedures and regulations are followed when spending the funds.

“In the hospital CEO’s ( Bawinile Ndlovu) PowerPoint presentation, she gave an overview of the hospital highlighting the population that the hospital serves and its dynamics, the referral system in place and the number of beds the hospital manages. Nqobile Radebe, Hospital Finance Manager indicated that the hospital received R732 101 000 for the current financial year and further highlighted how it has been spent so far including the high cost drivers,” she said.

Also, Human Resource Manager, Mxolisi Zulu gave an in-depth presentation on the hospital structure, staff establishment and further highlighted a seven percent vacancy rate.

“Both the national and provincial teams were very impressed with the finance management controls of the hospital and commended the senior management and the clinical staff who in spite of some of the hospital buildings being old and wards overcrowded, but they continue to render services to the people of Ugu District. This exciting engagement ended on a high note as the team not only thanked the hospital management for their good leadership but also thanked the Ugu Health District officials who were led by the District Director Linda Dlamini for providing support,” said Morai, adding that the national team acknowledged that a lot still needs to be done to improve the hospital’s IT systems as increased use of computers in hospitals has many benefits for patients, improves accuracy and timeliness of patient care, increases service availability, and can show improvements gaps for better quality patient care.
